Saturday in Nuremberg

We departed Regensburg/Kelheim Friday night and cruised up the Rhine-Main-Danube canal towards our final stop, Nuremberg, arriving there late Saturday morning. Our scheduled after-lunch bus tour in Nuremberg would take us past some of the city highlights, including some of the Nazi rally grounds from the late 1930s, ending up at the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg. The morning weather cruising the canal was clement, the afternoon overcast with some late rain. But we enjoyed it all.

Canal

Cruising the RMD canal. Not so wide as the Danube itself.

Rowers

A pleasant place for rowers, as long as you steer clear of bigger boats.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houses along Canal

Houses along the canal. Not part of any town that we could see. German suburbs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houses with Solar Panels

More houses, with lots of solar panels.

Walkers, with a bench to stop and rest on.

Into a lock at ...

Into a Lock

Would love to know what it translates to (if it translates at all).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Moored in Nuremberg

Some light industry where we finally moored at Nuremberg.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The afternoon bus tour was a mixed bag. Several different 1930s Nazi rally grounds, most in a state of disrepair (or never completely built), plus a tour of some older parts of the city that took us past a number of interesting buildings. We ended up walking through the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg, then down to the Main Market Square, from which we boarded our bus and headed back to the ship for a final-night celebratory dinner.

M25 Building

In some way connected with the 1939 Congress Hall.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Naza

The unfinished rally grounds built for the 1939 Congress Hall that was cancelled after the invasion of Poland. The bus drove into and around the inside of the stadium.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zeppelin Field

This is Zeppelin Field, another Nazi rally location.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Building

A wonderful, old ornate building.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nuremberg Symphony Hall

Nuremberg Symphony Hall

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Train Station

Motoring by the Nuremberg train station. I would have loved to have gone inside, but a stop here wasn't on our tour schedule.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tower

One of four towers (I think only three are still standing) that marked the four corners of the wall that surrounded the old town.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Building

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Building

The Nuremberg Palace of Justice.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palace of Justice

The wing of the Palace of Justice where the Nuremberg trials took place after World War II.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Building

An old bulding now used as a fire/ambulance station.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Imperial Castle

Heading into the Imperial Castle. The couple nearest the camera is Les and Joan (with her back turned to the camera) from Scotland, whose company we enjoyed on numerous occasions during the cruise. The Castle Sinwell Tower looms over the scene in the background.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On our way to the top of the Castle.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the Castle's top level.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This structure houses the Castle deep well.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Panoramic sweep of the north part of Nuremberg from the Imperial Castle, with storms approaching that would bring lots of rain as we wandered later through the Main Market Square. Much of the city was destroyed by Allied bombing in World War II, but most was rebuilt after the war just as it had been before the war.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Exiting the Castle

Heading down from the Castle towards the street.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On our way down the hill from the Imperial Castle to the Main Market Square

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St Sebaldus

St Sebaldus Church, built in 1215 and the oldest parish church in Nuremberg. It was badly damaged in World War II, but was restored after the war. We wanted to look inside, but couldn't find an open entrance, so continued down the street to the Main Market Square.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A rather neat little balcony over the street, almost ecclesiastical.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coat of Arms

Coat of Arms on the Old Town Hall.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We ended up in the Main Market Square and, despite the onset of steady rain, enjoyed ourselves walking around looking at all the food and trinkets. We bought some of both.
